Market Report October 2012
As the dark nights draw in and the winter approaches, now is the time for hot pot, casseroles, crumbles and pies. Luckily Greengrocer’s Choice can carefully select and deliver everything you will need.
At Greengrocer’s Choice we always try to source English produce where possible, as we want to support our farmers and just because it tastes great! Now is the time when we see a lot of English produce, especially vegetables, so order today to see for yourself just how great it tastes.
This is the season for English root crop vegetables. Carrots, Parsnips, swede and celeriac are now at their best and ideal for soup and stews.
English leeks, broccoli and cauliflower are all in season, and with Christmas fast approaching Brussel Sprouts are starting to make an appearance as is the beautiful savoy cabbage with its intense and strong flavour.
Look out for squashes, with Butternut being the most famous of the varieties.
As the soft fruit season is starting to finish, we sadly have to remove peaches, nectarines and apricots from the website. It’s not all bad news though, as the first of the Spanish Satsumas and Clementines will shortly start to appear. However, we wont be featuring them on the website until November as this is when they really start to be at their best.
Lemons, Grapefuit and Pommegranates are all starting to become seasonal, as are English Apples such as Coxes and Russets. We will also start to feature English Conference and Comice Pears.
As the English salad season ends; Peppers, Cucumbers and lettuce from across Europe becomes available. Mixed lettuces and baby leaf Spinach will ensure that the salad bowl is kept full.
